FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington will hold a campus memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, for recently retired UMF mathematics Professor Peter H. Williams, who died in a motorcycle accident in August.

The service will be held in Nordica Auditorium, located in UMF’s Merrill Hall. Immediately after the service, a reception will be held in North Dining Hall, located in UMF’s Olsen Student Center. The public is welcome to attend both the service and the reception.

Williams, 63, of Pittsfield, died on Aug. 14. He retired June 30 after 19 years as a mathematics professor at UMF, where he taught statistics, mathematics for elementary school teachers, problem-solving and geometry. He is the author of a statistics textbook that was used at the university for eight years. Williams was the chair of the UMF Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for many years and was also chair of the Faculty Senate from 1988 to 1990.

A statistical analyst for the Maine Health Research Institute, Williams participated in a number of projects to improve health care in Maine. He worked with a team that developed a nationally accepted model detailing cost-effective delivery of HIV treatment.

Williams and his wife, Rosalie, lived and raised their family in the Pittsfield community for 28 years. He worked for Cianbro Corp. in the mid-1970s and was also a trustee and teacher at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, where he served briefly as interim head of school in the 1970s.

The Williamses served as Peace Corps volunteer teachers in Sierra Leone, in West Africa, from 1960 to 1962. As a Fulbright specialist in South Africa in 1998, Williams researched approaches to training South African elementary teachers in mathematics and science.

Williams is survived by his wife and two sons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Peter Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund, UMF Development Office, 242 Main St., Farmington, ME 04938.
