STRONG – Two men were arrested Tuesday after police found them harvesting marijuana in a field in Strong.

Four people scattered and dove into vegetation in an attempt to hide when they heard an Army National Guard helicopter flying overhead at 10 a.m. The military was recruited to assist law enforcement agents to locate a field of marijuana at the home of Ronald Cabe, 47, of 577 Norton Hill Road, said Maine Drug Enforcement Agency supervisor Gerry Baril.

Maine State Police, Farmington police, Franklin County sheriff’s deputies and drug enforcement agents pursued the four, who were in the process of working on the plants, said Baril. In addition to Cabe, Gregory Shaw, 42, of New Vineyard was arrested at the scene. Two others were detained but were later released.

Shaw agreed to allow police to search his home in New Vineyard, where they found 15 marijuana plants, a half-pound of processed marijuana, and unidentified prescription drugs.

Meanwhile, in Strong, police harvested more than 50 marijuana plants valued at $75,000 on the street. In addition, they found five pounds of processed marijuana in Cabe’s home estimated to be worth $15,000.

Police charged Cabe with trafficking in marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute more than one pound of marijuana, and cultivating marijuana. Shaw was charged with aggravated cultivation of marijuana and aggravated furnishing of Class Z drugs.

Cabe was released Tuesday evening on $2,500 cash bail. Shaw is being held without bail on a probation hold.
