PHILLIPS – Old Home Days gets under way Saturday with a photo contest, Narrow Gauge ATV Riders Club poker run and toy collection, and a vintage vehicles cruise. Activities are planned for almost every day Aug. 12-20.

Photo entries should be submitted at Phillips Hardware, the poker run starts at 9 a.m. at North Franklin Park, and the cruise is from 2 to 5 p.m. at Bear Hill Variety.

The eighth annual golf scramble to benefit Phillips Public Library is at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sandy River Golf in Farmington Falls.

Events continue through next week with a talent show hosted by Phillips eighth-graders at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school. Halfway Down the Stairs day care will host an art auction featuring the work of kids Wednesday through Friday at the library, and a cribbage tournament begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the old gym on Depot Street.

Thursday features golf activities and a yard sale in the field across from Ron’s Service Center on Route 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. A gnome village at the home of Diana Bachelder on Route 4 in Avon will be open to the public Thursday to Sunday.

The Phillips Historical House on Pleasant Street will host a Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad exhibit, while Narrow Gauge Quilters’ works will be displayed at the Congregational Church from Friday to Sunday. There will be train rides at Dill Woods on Friday and the flower and garden show will be Friday to Saturday at the library. The library will also host a giant book sale on those days.

Face painting and hot dogs will be available Friday at UnitedKingfield Bank. The fire department and North Star ambulance base will have an open house, and the chicken barbecue and bean hole bean supper is 4 to 7 p.m. on the Community House lawn.

The Old Home Days Parade, the theme of which is “A little bit more than the law will allow,” begins at 5 p.m. Donald James is this year’s honored person. He is one of the original founders of the Phillips Old Home Days.

The parade is followed by bingo at the American Legion and then the street dance featuring Dreamin’ Big at 7:30 p.m.

Lantern rides on the train begin at 9 p.m. Friday at Dill Woods at the entrance to the North Franklin Park. The rides will also be offered Saturday night. Cost is $5, 12 and younger free.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, and Sunday, Aug. 20, activities begin with breakfast, plane rides and a flea market at the Lindbergh Airport.

There will be several competitions Saturday, including the Paul G. Whittemore Road Race at 9 a.m., a lumbering competition at 9 a.m. at North Franklin Park, a bike race at 10:30 a.m., bed race at 11:30 a.m., horse pulling at North Franklin Park, frog jumping at the Avon Mall and a horseshoe tournament in the park at 1 p.m., and the bathtub races at 3 p.m. on Toothaker Pond.

The Old Home Days Dance will be revived Saturday night and will take place at the old gym on Depot Street.

Old Home Days will finish Sunday, Aug. 20, with a chicken shoot in North Franklin Park at 9 a.m., Bob Parker Children’s Parade at 11 a.m., the Bill Robichaud Memorial Volleyball Tournament in the park at noon, and a duck derby on the bridge in town and kids games in the park at 1 p.m.
