BOURNE, Mass. (AP) – Police say four Cape Cod social studies teachers helped save a man’s life when they dragged him from a burning SUV.
Police say a 49-year-old Sandwich man, whom they didn’t identify, crashed in Bourne on Friday after losing consciousness while driving on Route 28.
Teachers Thomas Kelliher, John Long, Jeff Tribou and Adam Thomas – all from Lawrence Middle School in Falmouth – stopped and found the vehicle filling with black smoke. They pulled the man through the driver’s side door minutes before the SUV was engulfed in flames.
Kelliher told the Cape Cod Times it took all four men to move the victim because he weighed about 300 pounds.
Thomas said the teachers’ actions weren’t extraordinary. He said they teach civic responsibility all the time, and did what people are supposed to do.
