PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The Roger Williams Park Zoo is celebrating the birth of a new giraffe.
Zoo officials say their adult female Masai giraffe, Sukari, gave birth to a young female on the Monday before Christmas. The father is the zoo’s male, Griffin
The new calf weighed 90 to 95 pounds and measured 5-foot-6.
Lead giraffe keeper Jen Warmbold tells The Providence Journal says the baby was a little smaller than normal and zoo officials are trying to keep her life as close as possible to that of a wild giraffe.
The new arrival does not have a name. The newborn will probably stay with her mother for a year before being sent to another zoo, where it will be given a name.
