BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) – Police say a 16-year-old boy has been arrested after being found in possession of a knife and what appeared to be a hand grenade at Brattleboro Union High School.

Brattleboro police say the device was found on the boy after a school staff member saw him with a knife about 9 a.m. Thursday. The device was removed and later determined not to be explosive.

The boy, whose name wasn’t released because of his age, was cited into Vermont District Court but the charge wasn’t immediately clear. Police Chief Eugene Wrinn didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Thursday.

Police say he had writings in his possession that indicated he wanted to harm fellow students.
