DURHAM, N.H. (AP) -With just two months left before the start of its 2009 fiscal year, University of New Hampshire officials say the school will face an estimated $8.2 million budget deficit.
University officials are making it clear that broader, more far-reaching efforts are necessary to address what President Mark Huddleston called a “structural deficit” inherent problems that create gaps between income and expenses.
UNH has instituted a hiring freeze on all non-grant-funded, benefits-eligible faculty and staff positions; asked all departments to come up with as close to a level-funded budget as possible; and reduced administrative costs.
On the revenue side, university officials are working to ensure stable enrollments for next year and are developing a plan to deal with any possible decreases in state aid to the institution.
