MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) – A labor union official says workers at Shaw’s Supermarkets across Connecticut may consider going on strike if negotiations over a new contract continue to falter.
Brian Petronella, president of Local 371 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, says the union and the company remain divided over wage increases, the company’s contribution to health insurance and pension plans and Shaw’s proposed elimination of premium pay for Sundays.
The union represents 3,000 Shaw’s workers in the state.
Negotiations continued Saturday in Mystic. Union members are scheduled to vote Sunday in Cromwell on the company’s offer. Petronella says he will recommend that workers vote to strike if Shaw’s doesn’t change it proposals.
The current four-year contract expires Saturday night.
