CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Local and federal housing groups say the majority of people who have trouble making their mortgage payments in New Hampshire don’t seek help until it’s too late.

There are 22 nonprofit groups in the state that provide free financial counseling plus four federal and housing industry programs to help people stay in their homes.

Those who work in those programs say they’re getting more calls, but they’re still scrambling to raise awareness.

Experts say borrowers who may be eligible to modify their mortgages or switch from an adjustable rate to a fixed rate are crippling their chances if they wait until they miss a payment before seeing help.

The latest information on foreclosure rates shows that New Hampshire is faring better than most states, but the number of homes in foreclosure has risen steadily since 2005.
