WARNER, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire police are blaming speed and ice for triggering a multicar accident on Interstate 89 in Warner.
Police said six vehicles – including a tractor-trailer truck – were involved in the accident Monday morning. Police said the first two drivers lost control on ice-covered pavement in the southbound lanes. One struck the guardrail in the breakdown lane and the other hit the guardrail in the passing lane. A third vehicle attempted to avoid them and became lodged on top of the guardrail in the breakdown lane.
A tractor-trailer truck just missed hitting a state police trooper providing aid at the scene. The truck was then hit by a fifth vehicle which spun out of control into the guardrail in the passing lane. A sixth vehicle hit one of the stopped cars while trying to avoid the pileup.
Three people were taken to a hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The highway was closed for an hour after the accident.
