BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – A fast-moving band of thunderstorms packing high winds, hail and rain swept through northern Vermont on Thursday, downing trees and utility poles, authorities said. No injuries were reported.
In New Hampshire, downed trees were reported in Meredith, Franklin, Ashland and Sanbornton.
In Vermont, the hardest-hit towns were Milton, Georgia and Fairfax and parts of Cambridge, Fletcher, Westford and Underhill.
About 6,000 homes and businesses served by Central Vermont Public Service lost power, according to spokeswoman Christine Rivers.
At one point, 20 roads were closed due to damage, according to Vermont State Police Lt. William O’Leary. One tree fell across the southbound lanes of Interstate 89 in Georgia, forcing traffic to narrow to one lane to pass.
At least two occupied vehicles were struck by falling trees but no injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service posted tornado watches as the storms moved south, but no twisters were confirmed early Thursday evening.
