BARRE, Vt. (AP) – A historic firehouse is in for a sweet-smelling makeover.

Closed last year when the Fire Department moved into new quarters, the city’s 102-year-old brick firehouse is being sold for $150,000 to a local florist who plans to turn it into a flower shop. In a 4-3 vote Tuesday, the City Council chose the florist’s bid over ones that would have converted the 12,000-square foot building into a boutique hotel, a fitness center or a Vermont foods cafe and market.

The building, which opened when horses were still used to pull fire engines, has exposed brick walls, wooden ceilings and a basement. It was the city’s only firehouse until last year, when the Fire Department moved into a new $4 million public safety building.
