AMHERST, Mass. (AP) – Five University of Massachusetts students have been expelled in connection with last week’s campus riot that followed the football team’s NCAA Division 1-AA championship loss. UMass officials announced the disciplinary action against those students and four others on Thursday, a few days after 10 students pleaded not guilty to a slew of criminal charges. In addition to the expulsions, one student was suspended for at least a year and another was placed on probation.

Two students were given deferred suspensions, meaning that if they get into any more trouble they’ll be suspended.

Administrators are still considering action against other students, including the tenth student who was arrested.

“These disciplinary measures send a clear message that the university will not tolerate such violent and egregious behavior,” UMass spokesman Ed Blaguszewski said.

Officials said the riots resulted in more than $100,000 worth of damage to the Amherst campus.

UMass police said the riot after the football team’s 28-17 loss to Appalachian State on Friday was one of the worst disturbances at the school.
