HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A 22-year-old city woman was arrested Saturday on allegations she stabbed her three children, who were hospitalized in critical condition but expected to survive, police said.

Carmela Ortiz was charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of first-degree assault. She was held on $2.5 million bond and was expected to be arraigned in Hartford Superior Court on Monday. Authorities said they planned to file additional charges against her.

Police said Ortiz stabbed her 2-year-old twin sons and her 7-month-old baby boy at about 2 a.m. in her apartment on Ashley Street in the city’s Asylum Hill neighborhood.

The twins were flown to Yale-New Haven Hospital and the baby was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. All three were in critical condition.

Police Chief Daryl Roberts said Ortiz underwent psychiatric care at a hospital.

“We believe she may have tried to harm herself as well,” he told The Hartford Courant.

What led to the stabbings was unclear.
