CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -A New Hampshire father was reunited Tuesday with his 8-year-old son, who was found in Florida after being missing for 10 days with his mother and a 16-year-old boy.
Rodney Malone of Canterbury, N.H., flew south Monday after getting word that his son, Brennan, was safe and that his wife and the 16-year-old Nashua teen she ran off with were in custody.
Malone, Brennan, and his 10-year-old brother, Logan, were flying back to New Hampshire on Tuesday.
“Tonight’s going to be an easy night to sleep because I know where both of my boys are,” Rodney Malone told WMUR-TV.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Malone, 32, said almost nothing during a brief appearance before a judge in Pinellas County on Tuesday.
She was appointed an attorney to discuss bringing her back to New Hampshire to face a charge of bringing Christopher Cole, the 16-year-old, over state lines without his parents’ consent. Cole is to be brought back as a runaway.
Police said Jennifer Malone left New Hampshire because her relationship with the teen was about to be made public.
“They said that they were in love with each other and they had a relationship back in New Hampshire,” Detective Lorry Dunn of the St. Petersburg Police said of Malone and Cole. “They knew that it was legal in New Hampshire and it wasn’t legal here in Florida, so they said they had no relations in the state of Florida.”
The three traveled to Niagara Falls, Chicago, Indiana, Tennessee and Florida. They alternated sleeping in the van and at the beach in Florida.
When Malone ran out of money and lost the keys to the van, the three ended up sleeping in a homeless shelter. She also took a job at the Coral Reef Beach Resort in St. Petersburg.
