LEBANON, N.H. (AP) – A Dartmouth College freshman was in serious condition after crashing into trees while skiing at the Dartmouth Skiway.

The 18-year-old from Miami was taking part in a physical education class on Tuesday when she veered off a trail and into trees, said Dartmouth spokesman Roland Adams. She was wearing a helmet.

The college cited privacy laws and said it could not release the student’s identity.

The incident comes a year after another Dartmouth student died from injuries in a similar accident. Christina Porter, 21, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died last January, nearly a year after she ran off a trail at the Skiway and hit a tree.

Porter was not wearing a helmet when she crashed, but because of her accident, helmets now are required for all students and teachers in physical education classes.
