MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Manchester’s City Clerk says he’s underpaid and wants a raise.

A city committee on human resources was to consider City Clerk Leo Bernier’s request on Monday night for a $4,500 raise. If approved, it would increase his annual salary from $94,500 to $99,000.

Bernier also is asking for his position to be reclassified, to bring his job description in line with his daily responsibilities.

Many top city department heads currently earn six figures, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

Aldermen say they’re not inclined to support Bernier’s request. They say he should take his complaint to the state Department of Labor if he wants a change.

Bernier says it’s a question of fairness – he wants his pay to reflect his responsibilities.
