HARDWICK, Vt. (AP) – The fire that heavily damaged the downtown Bemis Block the day after Thanksgiving was not suspicious, said State Police Fire Investigator Robert Cushing.
Since the cause of the fire was not a crime, the state police will not continue to investigate and it will be up to insurance and fire officials to determine the cause, Cushing said.
“This is the way we handle it at this point,” Cushing said.
He did say the fire started in the in a corner above a first-floor real estate office.
The Nov. 25 fire heavily damaged the building in downtown Hardwick, but engineers have determined the building can be restored.
Officials are now planning to protect the structure so the restoration can begin in the spring.
