BOSTON (AP) – A Boston man convicted of killing a 43-year-old father of two as an act of revenge, and then firing at a police detective investigating the case, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison plus additional terms totaling 14 to 17 years.
John Powell, 33, was convicted of second-degree murder two weeks ago and received the mandatory sentence of life behind bars.
with the possibility of parole.
Powell shot Paul Gauthier on Sept. 5, 2002, after Gauthier allegedly vandalized an apartment Powell used as a crack house, prosecutors said.
Eleven days after shooting Gauthier, Powell shot at, but missed, Boston Detective Sgt. Daniel Keeler, who was investigating the case. Keeler returned fire, hitting Powell in the head.
Authorities said the gun used to shoot at Keeler was the same gun used to kill Gauthier.
An investigation determined that Keeler was justified in shooting at Powell.
Powell was also sentenced to nine to 10 years for shooting at Keeler, and to five to seven years for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute for drugs found in his pockets at the time of his arrest.
In a victim impact statement read during sentencing, Gauthier’s 10-year-son, Christopher, told of the pain of losing his father.
“My dad took me to work. We used to paint. We would hammer things. My dad let me use his hammer,” Christopher said. “Now my dad won’t be able to teach me any more sports. I will never be able to have kielbasa and watch the Green Bay Packers with him.”
