YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) – A 20-year veteran petty officer was suspended Wednesday after he was arrested on rape charges, the Coast Guard said.

Master Chief Petty Officer David A. Pierce, who is in charge of the service’s Provincetown station, is being held on $10,000 bail at Barnstable County Correctional Facility.

He was arraigned Wednesday in Barnstable District Court on five counts of rape and other charges. Yarmouth police said detectives received a call Tuesday morning from the alleged victim who reported past sexual assaults.

The Coast Guard released a statement saying Pierce was temporarily relieved of command and Chief Warrant Officer Kevin Galvin, currently assigned to Group Woods Hole, would temporarily assume command in Provincetown.
