PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) – Enjoy the rare spring-like weather this week, but watch out for avalanches!
The Forest Service is warning hikers in the White Mountains to pay careful attention to avalanche dangers. Officials say the especially wet weather last month has created conditions not normally seen until mid- to late-winter.
“I’ve been going up there for 15 years,” said Ranger Chris Joosen. “This by far is the earliest start and most substantial start.”
The Forest Service says it already has rangers patrolling the area – much earlier than usual.
The agency began posting avalanche advisories last week. During the weekend, the risk was moderate. On Monday, it was low.
“When it comes to future storms and future snow, we will have avalanches from here on out in certain locations,” Joosen said.
