NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) – University of Rhode Island basketball star Dawan Robinson was arrested following a bar fight, possibly jeopardizing his senior season.
Police charged the 23-year-old point guard with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and failure to disperse – all misdemeanors.
Robinson, a communications major, led the Rams to a 20-14 record and spot in the National Invitation Tournament two years ago.
He sat out most of last season with a foot injury.
URI spokeswoman Linda Acciardo would not say whether the arrest will keep Robinson from playing this year.
“That will be discussed internally,” she said. “You will know when we play our first game.”
Police arrested Robinson early Saturday morning following a fight at the Black Point Bar & Grille near Scarborough Beach. He was held in jail overnight and will be arraigned next Tuesday.
Narragansett Police Chief J. David Smith said the fight started between two women. One spat on the other, and Robinson came to her defense. The bartenders closed the bar, but the argument escalated as people moved into the parking lot.
Officers called for backup as more people began yelling, swearing and pushing each other. Smith said police told Robinson to leave the area four times, and several friends, including senior forward Jamaal Wise, tried to pull him away.
An officer issued a fifth warning and then told Robinson he was under arrest. As three officers tried to subdue Robinson, another student, Michele Bilodeau, jumped on one’s back and tried to pull him away from the basketball player.
Police sprayed Robinson with pepper spray and then four officers wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him, Smith said. They also arrested Bilodeau.
“Five times, Dawan Robinson was advised to leave, that his conduct was unacceptable, to chill out and go home and he didn’t,” Smith said.
He said police are still investigating the incident and more arrests will be made.
