BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) – A 23-year-old man died after he dove off a drawbridge in Barnstable early Saturday, police said.

Rescuers searched for Philip Jones, of Mashpee, for about eight hours before they found his body submerged in the water around noon.

Jones and four friends were diving off the 15-foot-high Pascule Bridge around 3:30 a.m. When Jones jumped into the water and didn’t resurface, one his friends called police on his cell phone.

An autopsy is planned, but police believe his death was an accident.

“It’s not uncommon for kids on hot nights to jump off this bridge,” said Barnstable Police Lt. Paul MacDonald. “They have been doing it since I was a kid. I’ve been a police officer for 26 years, and I can’t remember the last time this happened.”

A Coast Guard helicopter and boat helped police and firefighters search for Jones. His body was found submerged in West Bay about 250 feet from the bridge.

MacDonald, whose son attended Barnstable High School with Jones, said Jones was an accomplished athlete who excelled at basketball and baseball.

“He was an all-American kid,” he added.
