NASHUA, N.H. (AP) – Tom Jenkins couldn’t believe it when he looked inside the envelope he found along a city road – $100 bills, lots of them.

Jenkins was about to take the pile of cash – $20,000 – to the police department when his wife told him she had seen a police officer and man frantically searching the road he had just traveled.

Jenkins drove there instead and returned the money to a very grateful man whose wife had surprised him the night before with her secret savings accumulated over 15 years. The couple planned to refurbish their summer house in North Carolina with the money – but he had left the envelope on the roof of his car on his way to the bank.

He asked not to be identified for fear people might come to their home looking for more money.
