NORTH CONWAY, N.H. (AP) – The Red Cross, which normally helps fire victims, is looking for some help itself.

Fire gutted the agency’s local headquarters early Tuesday, destroying training and medical equipment and forcing the organization to set up temporary quarters.

Fire officials say the fire began in an electrical panel around 3:30 a.m.

Sue Perry, chairman of the Red Cross board of directors, guessed the fire destroyed around $30,000 in equipment, including training dummies and first aid supplies.

Fire Chief Patrick Preece said the agency will need public grants and private donations to recover.

“Usually, they’re the ones providing the disaster relief,” Preece said. “But now they need the help of the public to get back on their feet.”
