BOSTON (AP) – Two men are being held and authorities were looking for one or two others, according to the FBI, after an attempted armored car robbery in the city’s North End and a four-hour standoff outside of a Malden home on Thursday.
One man was arrested and another turned himself in, FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said.
The person or persons still at large were considered armed and dangerous.
Ater three heavily armed, masked men tried to rob the armored car, the investigation led authorities to the Malden home, Marcinkiewicz said.
It was thought at least one of the suspects was in the home. Authorities conducted negotiations with a person on the phone, whom they thought was in the home, but he was actually on a cell phone, she said. He is still at large.
A SWAT team with dogs entered the home at about 6 p.m., but did not find any of the suspects.
Authorities did not immediately release the names of the suspects or what they are charged with.
Boston police said three men tried to rob a Loomis Fargo armored car parked on Hanover Street across the street from Mike’s Pastry, a landmark pastry shop, just after 11:30 a.m. When they were spotted by a nearby police officer, they fled in a stolen blue van, police said.
The men abandoned the van for a red Buick, before later jumping into a white Ford Econoline van.
Officer Michael McCarthy said the suspects, all dressed in dark clothing, fled before they had a chance to steal any cash.
There were no reported injuries.
The suspects in the attempted robbery were armed with “long weapons,” Marcinkiewicz said.
Other residents of the Malden home, as well as neighbors, were evacuated during the standoff, but had been allowed to return home by about 7 p.m., she said.
A nearby school was also temporarily locked down during the standoff.
