SHERMAN, Conn. (AP) – State police have identified the man and woman killed in a murder-suicide at a police officer’s home Sunday.
Police say Zachary DaCosta, 41, shot and killed Francisca Benedetto, 40, before turning the gun on himself. Police did not provide details on the relationship between the two, who did not live in the house where they died.
Police say DaCosta did construction work on the Danbury police officer’s home, which is near the New York border.
The officer’s family was at church at the time of the shooting and was preparing to have a reception for a christening at their home, according to broadcast reports.
A caterer went to the home to deliver food for the party shortly before noon and encountered a man holding a gun to a woman’s head, state police said. The caterer, who was ordered to leave the home, called police.
State troopers responded and evacuated homes in the immediate area. They tried to establish contact with the gunman but were not successful. They heard several gunshots and entered the home, finding DaCosta and Benedetto dead in the master bedroom, state police said.
The chief medical examiner’s office in Farmington ruled that Benedetto died of multiple gunshot wounds and DaCosta of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
