CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) – Town police say an off-duty state trooper led them on a chase with speeds of more than 100 mph and later fought with officers before being subdued and arrested.

The trooper, 37-year-old Victor Diaz, who works out of Troop H in Hartford, was charged with reckless driving, making an illegal turn and other crimes early Sunday. He was released on a $5,000 bond with a court appearance expected this week.

State police said he has been suspended with pay pending an investigation, and his driver’s license has been suspended for at least 24 hours because he refused to take a breathalyzer test.

A town officer saw Diaz making an illegal left turn at about 2 a.m. Sunday and went to pull him over, police said. The chase went about 11/2 miles before Diaz pulled over.

Police said Diaz was combative and it took three officers to subdue him and put him in handcuffs. During the arrest, police said they found an illegal knife in Diaz’s car.

Diaz’s license could be suspended for up to six months pending a hearing that will result from him refusing to take the breathalyzer test.
