PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – With the Boston Red Sox’s “Curse of the Bambino” officially broken, the original sales contract transferring Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees is on the auction block.
Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein bought the contract for $99,000 dollars in 1993. For years, he sold copies of the document, giving the proceeds to charity. Overall, Feinstein said he’s raised $1 million using the contract.
Now the 1919 sales contract is for sale on the auction Web site eBay. It’s listed with a starting bid of $50,000 dollars, and with an unspecified reserve.
“I think one, this document has the ability to raise a lot of money, and two, the curse is finally broken and it’s the right time to move forward,” Feinstein said.
He said all the proceeds from the sale will go to charity.
The Boston Red Sox suffered a legendary curse after selling Ruth to the Yankees. The curse was broken with the team’s victory in the World Series this week. They hadn’t won since 1918.
