BOSTON (AP) – Sen. John Edwards visited Boston Sunday to raise money for presumed Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry amid intensifying speculation about Kerry’s choice of running mate.

Edwards, seen by many as one of Kerry’s top choices, headlined a late-afternoon fund-raiser at the Four Seasons Hotel for Kerry Victory 2004, a joint venture between Kerry’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

The event was closed to the news media. But at least one attendee said the senator from North Carolina did not indicate whether he would be Kerry’s pick.

“He’s a smart man, he doesn’t talk too much,” said Secretary of State William Galvin. Galvin said about 100 longtime Democrats and Edwards supporters were in attendance.

Edwards was introduced by Kerry’s brother, Cameron Kerry, who gave no indication of when or who the Massachusetts senator would chose as a running mate.

Edwards’ spokeswoman, Kim Rubey, said Edwards planned to fly home to Washington Sunday night.

Edwards interrupted his Walt Disney World vacation last week to meet with Kerry. Kerry is also considering Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri, Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa and Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, as well as other prominent Democrats.
