Some motocross lingo
Moto, from the French, refers to heats in motorcycle races, according to one race organization. Though “cross” would suggest cross-country racing, motocross races are held on closed, winding, dirt courses with jumps, hills and sharp turns over dirt and sometimes mud.
Jump glossary
• Tabletop: A jump across a dirt plateau, taking off on the upslope and landing on the downslope.
• Double: A jump from one mound of dirt over a gap or gully onto another mound.
• Whoops: Bumps 1 to 3 feet high in succession, similar to moguls in skiing.
