Authorities aren’t saying much about what Joseph Druce swallowed.
BOSTON (AP) – The convicted murderer accused of killing former priest John Geoghan was returned to prison after being hospitalized for swallowing something in his cell, a spokesman for the state Department of Correction said Sunday.
Joseph Druce swallowed an object in his cell at about 11 p.m. Friday and was taken to an outside hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
He was returned to the Souza-Baranowski maximum security facility in Shirley late Saturday night, prisons’ spokesman Justin Latini said.
Druce was alone in his cell when he swallowed the object Friday, but a guard witnessed it.
Latini would not say what Druce swallowed, but said prisoners are allowed certain routine items in their cells, including writing materials, electronics and even some food items.
Latini also refused to disclose any medical details, including whether it was a suicide attempt or an accident.
Druce allegedly beat and strangled Geoghan in the defrocked priest’s cell on Aug. 23.
Geoghan, 68, was serving a nine- to 10-year sentence for groping a 10-year-old boy and was accused of molesting nearly 150 boys over three decades.
His case triggered the sex scandal that has rocked the nation’s Roman Catholic Church.
Druce, 37, was serving a life sentence for the 1988 murder of a gay man.
Authorities have said he hates homosexuals, Jews, blacks and other minorities.
He unsuccessfully used an insanity defense during his 1989 trial in the killing of George Rollo, 51, who allegedly made a sexual advance toward Druce after picking him up hitchhiking.
