FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) -A 66-year-old Massachusetts man died Sunday of an apparent massive heart attack while hiking in the White Mountains with his grandchildren, officials said.
Alva “Roy” Peterson of Concord, Mass., died around 4 p.m. near the summit of Little Haystack Mountain on the Falling Waters Trail, said Fish and Game Lt. Douglas Gralenski.
The trail ascends from Interstate 93 in Franconia Notch to the summit of the 4,780-foot peak. Two other hikers, both doctors, tried to resuscitate Peterson but were unsuccessful.
Peterson was hiking with three grandchildren, aged eight through 11, who are also from Massachusetts. The children were with family Sunday evening.
Fish and Game officers and volunteers were carrying Peterson’s body off the mountain Sunday evening.
