DELAND, Fla. (AP) – A New Hampshire electrical worker who helped in post-Hurricane Charley repairs was killed in a crash on Interstate 4 Tuesday.
John Vahey, 48, of Freemont, was driving a truck in a convoy heading out of state when his truck struck a flatbed tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder near a rest stop, rolled and caught fire, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kim Miller said.
The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. A passenger in Vahey’s truck also was killed. The passenger’s name hasn’t been released pending notification of next of kin.
They were employees of PAR Electrical Contractors Inc. of North Kansas City, Mo., a subsidiary of Quanta Services Inc.
, and were part of a Connecticut-based crew returning home after being released late Monday from work in central Florida, said John Colson, chairman and chief executive officer of Houston-based Quanta.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our sincere condolences go out to the families, friends, and co-workers of the employees who lost their lives,” Colson said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.
The flatbed trailer truck’s driver, Cat Popejoy, 51, who was sleeping in the back of his cab, suffered minor injuries.
Miller said Popejoy was illegally parked on the shoulder, but noted he was also using warning flashers. Also, the rest area was full and the next-closest is more than an hour away.
The convoy was of workers contracted to help the Orlando Utilities Commission bring power back to thousands of customers after Charley struck the region on Aug. 13.
