MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – A Hinesburg teacher has been suspended from teaching for a week for giving his eighth-grade students a manuscript that contained profanity and sexual content, the Vermont Department of Education said.

Thomas Darling, an English teacher at the Hinesburg Community School, will have his license suspended starting Aug. 14.

Darling is accused of giving students parts of a book he was writing as an assignment in which students were to critique the manuscript.

The fictional story included profanity and sexual situations among students in a school.

School administrators reported the material to the Vermont Department of Education, said Chittenden South Supervisory Union Chief Operations Officer Bob Mason.

The license suspension agreement between Darling and the Education Department said the excerpts may have been inappropriate for some students.

School administrations “took appropriate action,” Mason said.
