Two people were killed Thursday in motorcycle wrecks in Auburn and Waterford.

In Auburn, a Poland man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle near the intersection of Broad Street and Hackett Road. Police said Robert Merrill, 19, was dead at the scene when they arrived shortly after 1 p.m.

Auburn police said Merrill was traveling south on Broad Street, between South Witham and Hackett roads, when he lost control of his motorcycle and drove off the road. He was wearing a helmet.

Merrill’s bike, a 1993 Suzuki, came to rest in a field roughly 60 feet from the road. Merrill was found near the edge of the woods approximately 45 feet from his bike.

A section of Broad Street was closed to traffic as emergency crews responded and an investigation got under way.

In Waterford, 51-year-old Jack Morrill of Wiley Road in Naples was killed late Thursday afternoon when his Harley-Davidson drifted off Routes 35 and 37 beside Bear Pond, struck a rock and was thrown into rocks, police said.

Police said he who was not wearing a helmet as he headed into Waterford, rounded a curve, caught some dirt on the edge of the road and crashed.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Tom Harriman was leading the investigation, assisted by other members of the department and Maine State Police.

The highway was closed for hours.

The accident remains under investigation.
