WALES – The only town ballot business for voters next week will be to name board members to the new regional school unit.

The town needs to fill two spots on the new Regional School Unit No. 4 board, overseeing newly consolidated Wales, Litchfield and Sabattus. Robert English, a member of the current School Union 44 board, is running for one spot. Melanie Newton-Burgess is running for the second.

“Basically, they’re running unopposed,” said Treasurer Sharon Siegel.

The new RSU will replace School Union 44, but neither schools nor member towns will change.

“The towns were Wales, Sabattus and Litchfield and that’s not going to be different,” she said. “The way it’s run, that may change.”

The old school board is expected to disband in June 2009. In the meantime, the new RSU will convene in early December to begin looking for a superintendent and to begin work on the 2009-2010 school budget.

Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Wales Town Office, 302 Center Road. Absentee ballots are available at the Town Hall, as well. There are two office hours scheduled between now and Tuesday’s election: from 5-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
