Dear Sun Spots: I wonder if your readers want to add fun and play to their lives in the coming year – something delightful to balance the work we adults do. Reading aloud at a licensed home-based child care facility from a prepacked bag of books could be just the thing to bring a spark to yours and our 2007!

BookReach, of the Auburn and Lewiston public libraries, is looking for committed, reliable volunteers to read to children under age 5, one weekday morning, for about 20-30 minutes, every one or two weeks. The picture books are colorful and fun, and their stories can stimulate in children the joy of opening books while bringing out a playful side in all of us.

Please phone Kathleen Demers, BookReach coordinator, as soon as possible at 784-0135, ext. 213, to begin the process of adding something fun and rewarding to your life and the lives of those being read to in 2007. – Kathleen Demers, Lewiston

Dear Sun Spots: Thanks for the great job you do at helping people find things. I love your column. My daughter-in-law has asked me to make a raspberry quiche for Christmas. I have searched the Internet for the recipe and the one recipe I found is not what she remembers having. The one I found is from a chef at the Citadel. Has anyone ever heard of it? Does anyone have a recipe for one? Thanks. I can be reached at firsticelady@excite.com. – L.W. Paris.

Answer:
Other than the recipe you mention above, the only recipe Sun Spots was able to locate was an apple and raisin one online at www.recipeland.com and Sun Spots wonders if you might consider substituting the apples for raspberries and in place of the raisins perhaps some high-quality white or milk chocolate? In this case you might also consider leaving out the cinnamon entirely, unless you happen to like raspberries and cinnamon. Ingredients & Directions: 1/3 c. raisins, 1 quiche shell (9 inch), 3 large apples, 2 large eggs (or ½ cup egg substitute), 1 cup whipping cream, ½ cup granulated sugar, 1½ tsp. cinnamon. Sprinkle raisins on bottom of quiche shell. Peel, core and slice apples; arrange over raisins. Whisk together eggs, cream, sugar and cinnamon; pour over apples. Bake in 375-degree oven for 50 minutes or until custard is nearly firm. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving or serve at room temperature.
