WYMAN TOWNSHIP – The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife reported Monday that two area hikers were OK after spending a chilly night Sunday on the Appalachian Trail in Franklin County.

According to a statement from the department, Michael J. Kenopensky of Bowdoin and Rick Davis of Lisbon were hiking in the Bigelow Range in Wyman Township but were unable to hike down the trail due to darkness. They were assisted by the Maine Warden Service on Monday morning.

Warden Pat Egan said that Kenopensky and Davis were hiking on Sunday night when one of them notified a family member at 10 p.m. to say it was too dark to hike off Horns Trail near Stratton Brook Pond Road. The family member notified the Maine Warden Service, and the men’s truck was located by the wardens later that night.

Kenopensky hiked off the trail on his own and met wardens at his vehicle around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, but Davis, who injured his knee, was located by wardens off the trail. He was able to walk to the vehicle with assistance, according to Egan.
