RUMFORD — NewPage Corp. began accepting and chipping logs for its
papermaking operations this week, after nearly a year of using other
sources for fiber, spokeswoman Janet Hall said.

Because of the renewed activities, the 100 or so positions originally slated for elimination will not be, she said.

The reason for restarting the log-unloading and wood-chipping operations is that it is now more economical to produce papermaking fiber in house, Hall explained.

Between 30 and 35 employees are needed for the two divisions, which feed the Nos. 15 and 10 paper machines. Hall said several workers who had taken other positions in the mill have returned to their old jobs.

She said the No. 15 paper machine is running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while the No. 10 machine continues to idle, as it has since September.

The No. 12 paper machine is also running 24/7, she said.

Besides the Rumford mill, NewPage Corp., based in Miamisburg, Ohio, has mills in Maryland, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nova Scotia, Canada.
