GRAY – Two men jumped from windows early Thursday to escape a house that went up in flames on North Raymond Road.
Brian Gagnon, 31, got out by crawling through a first-floor window, Fire Chief Richard Plummer said. He was later treated for minor scrapes.
Curtis Taylor, 45, also got out of the flaming house but went back inside.
“He went back in after a dog,” Plummer said. “He got trapped in there and had to jump out that second-story window.”
Taylor suffered burns on his arms, hands, chest and face. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Plummer said Taylor’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Taylor was no longer at CMMC late Thursday night.
The 4:15 a.m. blaze moved fast through the 2-story log house and destroyed it in spite of the efforts of crews from a half-dozen fire departments.
Plummer said the fire at 167 North Raymond Road was first reported when neighbors called emergency dispatchers and reported hearing explosions.
“When I got there, the house was fully involved,” Plummer said. “Two men had jumped out of windows. It was a little hectic for a while.”
Plummer said there were no working smoke detectors inside the house, so the men did not get an early warning that their home was on fire.
Propane tanks exploded while firefighters battled the flames, Plummer said, but no crew members were hurt. Two dogs survived the fire but one remained missing hours after the blaze.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to assist in the investigation. By Thursday night, the cause remained unknown.
