LEWISTON – A car slammed into an East Avenue utility pole Thursday morning, cutting power to the area, police said.

“The car was totaled and the pole was totaled,” Cpl. Jeff Baril said.

The driver, Grant Hutchinson, 47, of 16 Walnut St., Livermore Falls, was taken to a hospital after police reached the scene. His condition was not known.

Power to the houses along East Avenue, between Tampa and Forest streets, was expected to be out for several hours, Baril said, while the pole was being replaced.

“The guy was driving along, and we believe he had some sort of medical issue,” Baril said, causing him to slam into the pole.

Several passersby tried to help Hutchinson, Baril said. “(They) went to help him with the wires hanging above,” he said.
