AUBURN – A New York couple were held Wednesday without bail on charges of trafficking heroin.

Police chased Ernesto Villar, 20, and Cynthia Urra, 24, of the Bronx, N.Y., on foot after they ran from the Fireside Inn at 1777 Washington St. where they had been staying.

The heroin was found in their room, police said.

With help from hotel staff, police recovered 70 bundles of heroin weighing about 26.9 grams.

It had a street value of roughly $3,000. Police also seized $3,100 in cash, police said.

Police had conducted surveillance in the area after getting a tip about possible drug dealing.

They spotted Urra as someone with an outstanding warrant for a probation violation.

Urra was charged with aggravated drug trafficking and hindering apprehension, and was arrested on the outstanding warrant, police said.

Villar gave police a false name.

A fingerprint check confirmed his true identity, according to police.

Villar was wanted by authorities in New York City for a parole violation for second-degree felony assault.

He was charged with being a fugitive from justice, drug trafficking, failure to submit to arrest and failure to give correct name and date of birth.

He also is facing extradition to New York on the parole violation, police said.

The couple were being held at Androscoggin County Jail.
