Camp Rainbow

TOPSHAM – Children affected by cancer, ages 4 through high school, are invited to attend the American Cancer Society’s Camp Rainbow during the week of June 15 to 21.

Camp Rainbow operates at Camp Jordan on Branch Lake in Ellsworth, a facility of more than 200 acres with a waterfront, dining hall, ropes course, athletic areas, a theater stage and an arts and crafts building.

Children in treatment for cancer as well as those who are up to 10 years post-treatment are eligible to attend. Children ages 4 to 6 may attend with a parent or guardian; those 7 and older may attend alone. Chemotherapy and blood tests are given onsite by the medical staff.

For more information and an application for this year’s camp, contact the American Cancer Society at 800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.

Volunteers needed

PORTLAND – Recognizing that many schools, colleges, universities and businesses require community service hours, the Maine Parkinson Society is offering an opportunity to a volunteer to serve as chairperson for the Tulip Program.

The program is a fund-raising method to benefit people with Parkinson’s disease by selling tulip bulbs. The annual tulip bulb orders begin in May. The bulbs are delivered in September, in time for fall planting. Interested volunteers are encouraged to call 1-800-832-4116.

Foundation cited

LOVELL – The Susan L. Curtis Foundation has recognized the University of Maine Foundation for its support of the Camp Susan Curtis Arts Education Center at the Hewnoaks Volk Family Center in Lovell.

The University of Maine Foundation leases the Hewnoaks Volk Center to Camp Susan Curtis to operate an art education center, providing educational programs in a summer camp format for disadvantaged Maine teenagers.

The 15-acre property on Kezar Lake was bequeathed to the University of Maine Foundation by a Volk family member in 2005 with a preference for art education. Since its establishment more than 35 years ago by former Maine Gov. Kenneth Curtis and his wife, Polly, in memory of their daughter Susan, Camp Susan Curtis has been dedicated to serving disadvantaged and at-risk youth of Maine.
