In 1955, Ford Motor Company hired poet Marianne Moore to recommend names for a new car. Moore’s suggestions included Diamante and Civique. Ford decided on a more memorable (?) name: Edsel.

Incomplete alphabet: The names of hurricanes as selected by the World Meteorological Organization start with all the letters of the alphabet except Q, U, X, Y and Z. We figure it’s because of the short lists of first names with those letters. (Thanks to Doug Lyons of Scarsdale, N.Y.)

Explorer 1 was America’s first artificial satellite, launched on Jan. 31, 1958. The weight of that satellite was approximately the same as the normal weight of an adult male:
