AUGUSTA – Old Fort Western, in cooperation with the Oak Grove School Foundation, will host a one-day workshop called “Teaching about Economics” from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 11, in the fort’s Learning Gallery, 16 Cony St.

The goal is to provide teachers with the basic economics content they need to support social studies units tied to Maine’s new social studies standards.

The morning session will address basic economics knowledge, concepts, themes and patterns.

The afternoon session will concentrate on the economics “Applications” and “Global Connections” sections of the new standards.

Old Fort Western director and curator of education Jay Adams, will lead some of the sessions.

Attendance is by preregistration and is limited to the first 30 public or private working classroom teachers who sign up. Preference will be given to teachers teaching grades three and up. A $20 stipend will be paid to all registrants who stay through the full workshop day. Lunch will be provided.
