Doran on lung association board

AUGUSTA – Peter Doran has been appointed to the American Lung Association of Maine Leadership Board. The board is a group of volunteers who work to uphold the mission of the American Lung Association, which is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.

Doran is a retired emeritus professor of health education from the University of Maine at Farmington. He was involved with developing academic programs in rehabilitative services, community health and school health education.

Doran is on the board of Maine Indoor Air Quality Council and Maine Occupational Health Research Agenda. He resides in Belgrade with his wife, Lois.

Lawn workshop

BREWER – In an effort to promote the use of safe, environmentally friendly lawn and turf care practices, the Maine Department of Agriculture is sponsoring an organic turf and lawn workshop from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Jeff’s Catering and Banquet Center.

School maintenance personnel and groundskeepers, parks managers, landscapers, lawn care and pest management professionals, horticulturists, garden center staff and other interested individuals are welcome. Licensed pest applicators may earn six recertification credits for attending.

The cost is $45 a person, if received by the preregistration deadline of Tuesday, March 25, and $55 a person at the door. Breakfast and lunch are included. Girls Rock events

WATERVILLE – Hardy Girls Healthy Women (HGHW) is inviting girls and their families to take part in a Girls Rock! Weekend on April 4 to 6 at various locations in downtown Waterville. Girls Rock! Weekend will include three days of empowering events for girls and their allies, all celebrating girls’ voices in music, art and literature.

The weekend will kick off on Friday, April 4, with the opening of “Girls Rock!” movie. It will wrap up on Sunday, April 6, with a Girls Poetry Mashup from 1 to 3 p.m. at Soup to Nuts in downtown Waterville.

Women outdoors

AUGUSTA – The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program has many outdoor programs on tap for 2008.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman offers programs aimed toward women age 18 or older who are interested in learning skills in hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation in a safe and comfortable environment.
