AUBURN – Fire crews went to Hackett Road on Tuesday to check out a report of a collapsed roof at a vacant warehouse. They found the crumbled roof but also discovered that the damage had been done as much as a week ago.

Nobody was inside the building at Hackett Road and Washington Street when the roof succumbed to the weight of snow, fire officials said. A neighbor told them the collapse had occurred last week, around the time of a rainstorm.

The owners of the building had secured the area with caution tape and were expecting to return Wednesday to determine if the building was salvageable or if it should be torn down.

Fire officials said the building was once an Agway warehouse but that it has changed ownership several times in recent years. It is mainly used to store agricultural products such as grain and fertilizer. The building was mostly empty when the roof caved in, fire officials said.
