AUBURN – Three women were examined for injuries Monday night after the SUV they were riding in slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Center Street.

Police said none of the injuries were life-threatening. But for nearly an hour, emergency crews responded and police from several agencies searched for the tractor-trailer, which failed to stop at the scene.

By late Monday night, police said the driver of the rig probably did not realize the tractor-trailer had been struck.

“There’s a good chance he had no idea what hit him,” said Auburn police Lt. Gary Boulet.

The crash occurred at about 8:15 p.m. Police said a woman driving a Dodge Durango was pulling out of a lot on Center Street and lost control on black ice.

That vehicle slid into the back of a truck hauling a trailer south on Center Street.

Police said there were signs that the truck driver stopped his vehicle and looked at the back of it but probably did not realize his rig had been struck.

Auburn police notified county sheriff’s officials and Maine State Police who were on the lookout for the truck Monday night.

The women hurt in the wreck, who police said had been leaving Flagship Cinemas, were examined and later released.

Their identities were not immediately available.

Police were still searching for the driver of the tractor-trailer late Monday night.
