A heavy snow warning was posted Sunday afternoon by the National Weather Service, in effect through midday today across the southern half of Maine, while a snow advisory is in effect over central Maine.
Up to 10 inches of new snow could fall before the storm eases, according to the NWS.
A coastal low pressure system racing northeastward will feed the snowfall through the morning hours before snow tapers northeast in the afternoon.
By the time it ends, the forecast calls for the north and mountains to have 3 to 6 inches of new snow with 5 to nearly 10 inches on the ground elsewhere.
Another storm will follow Tuesday, with snow by afternoon. Potential snowfall could be significant by early Wednesday morning, the NWS said.
